| The NKTI Medical Laboratory ISO 15189:2007 Accreditation Awarding Ceremony |

After almost 2 years of extensive preparation and hard work, The NKTI Medical Laboratory was awarded the ISO 15189:2007 accreditation on December 15, 2009. The ISO 15189:2007 (Medical Laboratories – Particular Requirements for Quality and Competence Accreditation) is the highest level of recognition that can be given to a medical laboratory. The awarding ceremonies were held last January 18, 2010 at the NKTI Atrium.
This was opened by Dr. Enrique T. Ona, Executive Director, who emphasized on the need for enhancing the laboratory quality management system to increase confidence in laboratory results and subsequently to open doors for further economic growth for the Institute and for the country. This was followed by a message of inspiration from the guest speaker, Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya of the Department of Trade and Industry. She congratulated the laboratory staff for their continuous effort to uphold quality in the laboratory.
Dr. Arnold Joseph M. Fernandez, Quality Manager and Project Team Leader for The NKTI Medical Laboratory ISO 15189:2007 Accreditation shared first-hand accounts of the laboratory staff’s painstaking journey into seeking the accreditation. He also recognized the individuals who were key to the project’s success.
The NKTI Medical Laboratory ISO 15189:2007 Accreditation was awarded by the Department of Trade and Industry - Philippine Accreditation Office headed by its Officer-in-Charge Cirila S. Botor. The certificates were awarded to the following sections of the laboratory: Hematology, Serology, Clinical Microscopy, Clinical Chemistry, Immunochemistry, HLA section, FISH and Cytogenetics Laboratory, Molecular and Cytogenetics Laboratory, Flow Cytometry Laboratory and Special Chemistry. These were received by the respective section and division heads and chief medical technologists. Ms. Botor was assisted by Undersecretary Maglaya, Dr. Enrique T. Ona and Dr. Aileen A. Riego-Javier.
The main certificate of accreditation for the NKTI Medical Laboratory was received by the Laboratory Director and Chairman, Dr. Januario D. Veloso and ISO 15189:2007 Project Team Members Dr. Arnold M. Fernandez, Mr. Romeo B. Dy and Dr. Ivy A. Rosales.
