About Us

Pediatric Urology is a urological and surgical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of congenital abnormalities (present at birth) involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and the reproductive organs of children. However, many of the problems seen at clinic may also be acquired and treated without surgery. These may include urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection, vesico ureteral reflux among many others.

Pediatric urologists treat conditions of the male reproductive tract (e.g., undescended testicle) and the male and female urinary tracts (e.g., urinary tract infection). The urinary tract consists of the organs that filter the blood and form urine (kidneys), the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys (ureters), the organ that stores urine (bladder), and the tube that carries urine from the bladder and removes it from the body (urethra).

Our patients range in age from premature infants through late adolescence and, for some children with complicated problems, into young adulthood.

Why A Pediatric Urologist

Children are different. A child's urinary tract (kidney, ureter, and bladder) and genitalia are different than those of an adult, and the medical and surgical management of problems in these areas require a different approach on the part of the treating physician.Pediatric urologists had have developed special skills in working with the physiology of children and the conditions related to their genitourinary functions.

What We Can Do

In some conditions simple medical treatment and careful follow-up as the child grows and develops is all that is needed for some conditions. If surgical intervention becomes necessary our goal is to restore normal anatomy and allow normal development to continue.

Some of the problems we can manage are:

  • Ambiguous genitalia or intersex
  • Bladder and cloacal exstrophy
  • Bed-wetting
  • Kidney stones
  • Hypospadias
  • Phimosis/paraphimosis
  • Hydrocoele
  • Hernia
  • Female genital anomalies
  • Birth defects of the kidneys and bladder
  • Testicular, kidney and urinary bladder cancer
  • Testicular torsion
  • retero pelvic obstruction
  • Ureterovesical obstruction
  • Ureterocoele
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
  • Care of spina bifida and neurogenic bladder patients

Our Tools

We have full laboratory facilities available for the work up of the pediatric patient. We have a state of the art Urodynamics machine for assessing bladder function. We have an extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy machine (ESWL) for stone problems. In addition we have fluoroscopic x ray, CT scan and open table MRI should they be needed in the diagnosis of certain problems. Our nuclear medicine facility provides us with the ability to assess renal function and obstruction using specialized nuclear renal scans.

Our operative facilities are capable of handling all urologic cases. We are also capable of minimally invasive surgery, both endoscopic and laparoscopic. In addition, we are complemented by an anesthesiology department that is highly capable of delivering expert peri-operative, intra-operative and immediate post-operative care.
